ARGOT 2016 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard Sonoma Mountain
VINEYARD Designed, installed, farmed and tended, Argot’s Estate Vineyard has been a labor of love since day one, that we are proud to own 100% control of. Planted on our steepest hillside, allowing for only 2,075 vines per acre (less dense than the Pinot Noir and Syrah blocks), with the goal to grow perfectly ripe fruit of significant intensity. Perched at 1000’ elevation on the NW-face of Sonoma Mountain at the far western edge of the AVA. Planted, 2009.
PRODUCTION 100 cases
CUVEE 100% Chardonnay, Old-Wente, Hyde selection
CRUSH Night harvested by hand on 9/15, whole-cluster pressed direct to barrel, no settling for maximum lees contact
FERMENT Barrel fermented on heavy lees; 100% malolactic fermentation
AGING 20 months in new French oak, finished 2 months in steel tank
NOTES Planted in the steepest, coolest section of the vineyard. This Chardonnay block is the most meager producer in the entire portfolio. Yielding both tiny clusters and berries, these vines produce fruit of intense power and flavor, all while retaining a vibrant backbone of acidity owing to the cool-climate nature of the Estate Vineyard’s terroir. Year-to-year, average yields hover just above a paltry 2 tons per acre, resulting in a wine of significant intensity of character.
PRESS Elegant and rich-tasting, with concentrated Fuji apple, pear tart and melon flavors that feature a medium-grained texture. Buttery and spicy notes emerge midpalate, lingering into the plush, creamy finish. Drink now through 2023. 92 pts, Wine Spectator
