VINEYARD A site located at 1,100 feet on the Northwest crown of Sonoma Mountain, where the volcanic soils and exposure to pacific ocean influence lead to early budbreak, followed by long, consistent growing seasons.
PRODUCTION 150 cases
VARIETAL 100% Syrah. Clones: 90% Clone Alban 1, 10% 470
CRUSH Hand harvested, at first light on October 25. In the winery, the grapes are fully de-stemmed, berry-by-berry hand sorted and fully crushed.
FERMENT 5-day cold soaks, followed by native fermentation in open-top vats. Average time of 20 days on skins.
AGING 22 months in new French oak barriques. Never racked prior to bottling. Bottled unfined, unfiltered.
NOTES Sonoma Mountain’s ridgetops — demarcating the cool Sonoma Coast AVA, from the more moderate Sonoma Valley AVA — deliver an utterly unique expression of Syrah, giving a singular expression of California Syrah. The variety’s tendency towards a rich and dark intensity dominates, delivering by a full-bodied, concentrated structure, all while a balance of coastal influence remains assertive by way of an inky elegance, and a healthy dose of lifting florality and feral savoriness, Syrah nuts like us crave and adore!
PRESS Another beautiful, classic Syrah from this estate that readers are going to love. Coming from a site on Sonoma Mountain, it has a complex nose of spiced black raspberries and blackberries mixed with notes of camphor, bacon fat, spiced meats, and dried flowers. Complex and full-bodied, with a round, layered texture and a great finish, it’s well worth seeking out and is going to stand up to any Syrah coming out of California today. 96+pts, Jeb Dunnuck
