WINEMAKER SELECT CUVÉES
2019 “BASTARD TONGUE” | PINOT NOIR
94 points, Jeb Dunnuck
With its late start, 2019 was always destined to have a fast and furious harvest. Following 2018’s unprecedentedly late season, it came as quite a surprise when harvest 2019 kicked off even later in the year. These two vintages however, could not have arrived at more different conclusions. While 2018’s harvest season was a glorious, top-down Sunday drive along the coast; 2019’s was an all-out drag race to the end (deploy the parachute, and all!)... with this wine definitively exemplifying the spirit of its season.
Pouring a deep-hued magenta, 2019’s BT is nothing short of full-tilt-boogie Pinot Noir. From the jump, a heady swirl of ripe raspberries and succulent blackberries explode from the glass. Textures caress the palate with other-worldly talent as the wine unfurls in a tsunami of red and black fruits, all while accompanied by the hallmark notes Bastard Tongue lovers have come to appreciate and expect — white flowers, forest floor, conifer tree, allspice and that tell-tale Oriental plum sauce.
A wine of unbridled intensity and power, seamless textures and a unerring purity. A pinnacle Bastard Tongue that is the culmination of nearly a decade of producing this cuvée. We can not wait for you to experience this wine!
2019 CABERNET SAUVIGNON | SUGARLOAF VINEYARD
97+ points, Wine Advocate
Our oldest vineyard relationship in Napa Valley — dating back to 2012 — we have adored the ferociously steep and rocky Block 6 at Sugarloaf Vineyard since day one. Our coolest Cabernet Sauvignon site, deeply affected by ocean influence via San Pablo Bay, we love the profound, classic, age-worthy wines this site produces.
Mother Nature was kind to this site in 2019, being our most bountiful crop here yet. With perfect set, and vines displaying great health, this normally stingy hillside delivered superlative quality, without restraint of yield. After a slow start in the Spring, 2019's particularly warm September and October played beautifully to the vineyard's strengths, and delivered a classic Halloween-time harvest.
Sugarloaf's terroir continues to impress with its expression of classically-styled Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons — impeccably pure black and red fruit character; broad, rich, perfectly ripe tannins; classic Napa Valley notes of cigar leaf, eucalyptus, and freshly-tilled earth; and definitive complexities of clove, all-spice and bay leaf. Having assessed past vintages with a few years of age, we have come to greatly value the significant reward Sugarloaf delivers after a few years in the cellar. Aging is strongly recommended...if you have the discipline to keep your hands off in the meantime.
2019 CABERNET SAUVIGNON | 1555 OAKVILLE
95+ points, Wine Advocate
Hailing from the historic Bonny's Vineyard in the heart of Oakville, a site that helped bring the mighty Silver Oak to significant prominence in the 1980s. Gravel rich soils promote vine roots to plumb deep into the valley floor, while leaf canopies harvest Napa's persistent summer sunshine. These conditions conspire to a profound Cabernet Sauvignon terroir at this marquee Oakville site.
A fantastic vintage to debut our 1555 Oakville (a play on the vineyard's address) bottling. A cool, wet Spring contributed to a slow start, forcing us to pay particularly close attention to vine balance at each stage of the growing season. After dialing in the vines with aggressive farming practices, what resulted was a particularly late harvest — by this site's standard — of exquisitely ripe and delicious Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Pouring a deep opaque red-violet, 1555’s Cabernet personality leaps from the glass balancing opulent fruit, damp earth, chilling minerality and an alluring spicy note that keeps pulling us back for more. Exquisitely ripe tannins provide a refined, velvety structure, that expertly delivers the deep and seductively rich palate. A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon of undeniable pedigree.
2019 CABERNET SAUVIGNON | SAGE RIDGE VINEYARD
95 points, Wine Advocate
The untamed, dramatic, ridgetop landscape of Sage Ridge Vineyard delivers a wine that has come to be a favorite among the Argot faithful. Down in production in 2019 due to uneven weather during flowering, if you've been a fan of this bottling in the past, we highly encourage you to take advantage of its availability, before its too late.
Unseasonably cool weather during flowering in 2019 significantly reduced yields in our Clone 7 block, while Clone 15 had its most bountiful year yet. With that our 2019 bottling is the first cuvee that tipped in favor of the robust, suavely structured, red-fruited Clone 15 selection. The results are so thrilling, we will continue to pursue this balance to the cuvee moving forward. A true knockout of a wine!
Crystalline-pure red-fruit character, delivered on a ribbon of ultra-suave tannins and seductive high tones. The palate never relents its come-hither posture. Aromatically, this bottling continues to present an intriguing botanical complexity that is unmistakably site-specific. As our experience with this one-of-a-kind terroir deepens, we remain endlessly excited for the potential of these unique ridgetop vineyards. Get your hands on a bottle and pull the cork...a wine built for immense near-term gratification.
